How to Twitter to Promote Your Business...
By Rick Waters, CEO Webcast 1, Inc.
By now you've no doubt heard about the Twitter phenomenon. The reason it is catching on is because it is actually quite a dynamic and useful way to promote your business inexpensively.
Twitter allows businesses or individuals to send out short updates / blurbs of less than 140 characters to whoever is on their 'follower'
list. For instance - after this page was published, I sent out a 'Tweet' to my 'followers' at www.twitter.com/webcast1 saying 'How
to Use Twitter for Business'. It ís all about telling your followers about what you're doing at that moment. Here are a few examples how we're helping our clients use twitter to promote their businesses:
www.SubstanceAbuse.com tweets a daily affirmation on serenity and positive thinking out to it's followers on www.twitter.com/Daysaffirmation.
San Antonio Spine tweets tips about back pain and back care helping drive traffic and promote interest to their orthopedic practice - www.twitter.com/saspine.
Oppenheim Law http://twitter.com/oplaw tweets almost daily on tips to help save your home from foreclosure and foreclosure law.
Large companies are seeing the benefit of tweeting as well...
Samsung has a twitter page dedicated to cellular phone tips and tweets product and company news. Comcast offers a friendly Twitter customer support; what I personally like about their profile is the real person photo instead of the company logo. Google sends out messages about the cool new programs it's developers are building. John Wolf - who runs Marriot's Twitter page says "If we have something compelling to say, people will find us (follow us). With that said, inclusion in regular mailings to Marriott Rewards members is one publicity tool we have used to get the word out."
Webcast 1 also uses Twitter to send out announcements of new website launches. This helps us build our brand and help give our clients a promotional boost as well. We also send out 'Did You Knows' about our services and tips on new ways we learn to help our clients.
The goal is to provide helpful tips, exclusive information or news of value and thereby attain 'followers' - people who like receiving your messages.
More tips for using Twitter to help market your business:
Start by registering your company name on Twitter (before someone else does). Your Webcast 1 consultant or SearchWiz SEO will be happy to show you how or set it up for you.
• Build a strong 'profile' (like you can in FaceBook) by placing your company logo and branding elements on the page. Link back to important sections of your website.
• Be creative with your Tweets. No one will care much for hearing about what you ate for lunch, but they might be pleased to know you just updated your website, or put a popular product on sale.
• Whatever you tweet should be informative or newsworthy. Don't over do it either - wait until you have something intriguing happens or you have something to contribute to your followers that they might benefit from (tips, short how tos, links to helpful articles).
• You may want to follow experts in your field - to find them - type industry keywords in Twitter.com and you'll see a list of matches.
If you find someone who's 'tweets' you like, follow them.
• Place your Twitter profile URL in the bottom of your emails near your phone and email address.
• Use relevant keywords 'tag' in your profile so you can get found by other like-minded Twitterers.
• Create some viral traffic. Ask your friends and followers to Tweet about your new message and it
will spread faster and further as other active users pick it up. There is a viral nature to all types
of news, especially on a site like Twitter.
