Emetrics | Measuring Your Traffic & Success

Why and How to Analyze Traffic Logs

On the Web, you can track and measure virtually anything. It's called e-metrics. Tracking is essential in analyzing your marketing strategy and results. But you can easily become overwhelmed by all the data. What should you track? How do you read it?

SearchWiz Marketing helps you keep track of your visitors and traffic results so you can effortlessly see the progress you are making. Our consultants will help you define your objectives so these can be measured and the results tracked.

Most web sites fall within the following in regards to objectives:

  • E-commerce sites: The objective is to increase sales and decrease marketing costs.
  • Content sites: The objective is to increase readership and time spent on the site.
  • Lead-generation sites: The objective is to increase lead generation.
  • Self-service sites: The objective is increase customer satisfaction and decrease support inquiries.

How to Measure Results through Traffic Analysis

Traffic analysis is an important aspect of managing your promotional efforts. You should know where your visitors are coming from and in what numbers.

The most common traffic log terms you should know include:

Hit: An HTTP request made to your server. The request is not only for the HTML files, but also for the images, movies, and java script or css file which make up each web site page. If you use frames, then one actual page view can result in multiple hits, as the page is made up of multiple files. When log analysis programs read the server log files, they'll report total hits. This total will always be larger than the total page views.

Impression or Visit: A page view. An impression is when someone views one of your HTML pages.

Referrer: A page that links to your site. Looking at your referrers will tell you who's linked to your site. It can be another web site or a search engine.

User Agent: This refers to the software used to access your site. Can be a browser, a client, a PHP script, or a search engine spider.

Counters and Trackers: A counter is a simple script that records the number of visitors to a site and displays the total on the web site.

E-metrics and traffic logs can tell you the number of visitors to your site, and can also break the statistics down by date, time, browser, page viewed, referrer, and more.

SearchWiz Marketing's Webstats tracking software monitors your web site and measures the traffic coming to your pages. Our consultants keep an eye on those statistics and analyze the traffic patterns over time. We study the times at which your site receives the most traffic in order to provide you with insights into your audience. We review the pages that visitors use to enter and leave your site, to tell you which portions of your site are the most popular and which sections need improvement. We use traffic logs to help measure the effectiveness of search engine optimization and pay per click (PPC) campaigns.

We'll be glad to review your web site for free, and show you what we can do to help your business and traffic grow. Let us analyze your traffic logs and create a custom marketing plan for you.
