Keywords

What are "keywords"?
Keywords play the most important role in your website. The most popular method for someone to find your website is to type in a keyword or keyword phrase (two or three words) on a search engine’s “search” bar.

Search engines, such as Yahoo and Google for example, use software commonly known as “spiders” to look for matching keywords or keyword phrases on web pages over the internet.

The hidden computer language used to construct your website contains “meta tags” which are also picked up by the search engine spiders. Meta tags “speak” to search engines; content on your web pages speak to people. Meta tags must contain the same important and most popular keywords which are contained in the main content of your web pages in order to properly index your site. Each web page, therefore, should contain meta tags and content based on the topic contained in that page.

Using Relevant Keywords
The first step in creating a particular web page’s content is to determine which keywords or keyword phrases to focus on. There are methods for determining which keywords or phrases are most popular, and which ones are not, which determines Keyword relevancy. Your web pages will contain content based on a main topic. Although a particular keyword has a high popularity, it may be too broad in terms of a search word. Keyword phrases, therefore, can help make your website more “visible” to the search engines if your keyword phrases are more specific. For example, let’s imagine your particular web page is about the 1957 Ford Thunderbird. Now let’s say someone goes to Google to search for “cars”, “Ford cars” “Ford Thunderbird” and “1957 Ford Thunderbird”. The first search will bring up thousands of results. The following searches will narrow down the results, and the search for “1957 Ford Thunderbird” will be even more specific. You don’t want your website to be buried among the thousands of the first search. Being specific in your keyword and keyword phrases will help your page rank higher in the search engines, making it easier to find, resulting in increased traffic to your website.

The results returned for a search are mainly based on keywords or keyword phrases, however, there are other factors that search engines consider. One such factor is the link popularity of your website..
