Title Tags
The <title> (beginning of title) and </title> (end of title) tags are technically not meta tags, but nevertheless, they are important to discuss. Title tags encompass your page’s title which will appear at the very top of the page window. As an example, notice the title of this page at the top left hand corner of the window. The “title” tags enable the search engines to use your page title as a link to your website in the search engine results pages.
Titles should be around 90 characters so as not to be cut off in the menu bar or search result. The title should consist of relevant keywords pertaining to the page topic. Since people search for keywords rather than company names, you can use the title as an opportunity to convey what products or services you have to offer. If room allows, then you can mention your site or company name at the end of the title. The most relevant keywords should appear first. Think of what your potential visitors will type as search criteria in the search engine’s search field. Titles should be different for each page. This helps the search engines index the pages without confusion.
The title tag also serves as the “bookmark” or “favorites” name when you choose to save the page (as a link) in your “favorites” folder.
